A meeting for immersion teachers in the Canton of Zurich

Friday 28th November, 2008

I was invited to give the plenary talk and two workshops at a meeting for subject teachers from around the Canton of Zurich recently hosted by the Maths and Science Grammar School in Zurich.

One of the many great things about the event was that there were 80 +  teachers.  It's such a pleasure to get to actually meet so many subject teachers from different disciplines in one place.  I would put money on it that they don't meet like this in other circumstances!
Thanks for that go to dear colleagues, Eveline Reichel and Martina Wilder.  Eveline and Martina have made their immersion days a welcome event and one which grows year on year as the teachers who come on their methodology courses become part of this valuable network of teachers.

The programme was divided into three sections, plenary, workshop 1 and workshop 2.  I talked about receptive skills in my workshop which was repeated to give colleagues the opportunity to come along if there was something they wanted to see in either of the other two workshops, on Physics Immersion and How the brain learns.

Eveline tells me that the meeting was overbooked and I know there is some pressure to expand the event to allow more people to attend.  This would mean running it over into two days.  There are pros and cons to this, and some colleagues preferred the afternoon slot crammed with stuff, than two days.  We'll see how they manage.

There were teachers from a number of subjects and Eveline tells me that Science and Geography are the most numerous, but there were two very keen young Maths teachers (hi to Andre and Rene) who are new to the project and had lots of questions to ask about English-medium Maths (an area I've just got into myself).

They, for two, would like to see a Mathematics Vocabulary Practice Series from Macmillan, so I hope they are listening!  I can think of other contexts where such a publication would be well received.

Thanks should also go to Macmillan for their co-sponsorship of my attending the event and also for the splendid dinner afterwards in a local restaurant offering traditional Swiss cooking (no, I didn't have the 'fondue' this time!).

Thanks also to Macmillan for donating two books from their catalogue as prizes for participants in an end of day draw.  It was a nice gesture to end the day with.

Eveline is already talking of a return, for my part it would be great to visit some of these schools and see what goes on in there classrooms.  I'll keep you posted!
